Letter to the Prime Minister regarding Current Negotiations on the Proposed Carbon Price

18 April 2011

The President of the Business Council of Australia, Graham Bradley, has written to Prime Minister Julia Gillard to record the issues the BCA wants to see addressed in the government’s consultation process to determine the details for putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions.

The letter makes the point that the current compensation arrangements for trade-exposed industries and the electricity sector are inadequate.

The letter highlights that the current negotiations are taking place in a very different environment to that when the details of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme were being considered.

International climate change negotiations have made limited progress, and the levels of economic recovery across the economy following the global financial crisis are variable.
